Hashimoto’s Disease.. What is it?
Hashimoto’s disease is a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid. The thyroid gland produces hormones that coordinate many of your body’s functions. Inflammation from Hashimoto’s disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).
Whilst reading her blog articles on gut health. She stated “One of the BIGGEST symptoms I personally experience with having Hashimoto’s is gut problems. 5 Everyday Habits to Promote Good Digestion
Apart from my obsession for all things French, I have a keen and ever increasing passion for all things gut related. Not quite in the same realm as each other, but any who…whatever floats your boat. I speak quite a bit about the topic of gut health in my blog (www.chitchatchomp.net) but I haven’t spoken much about the WHOLE digestive system, from when you sit down and take that first bite.
Please note, this is my own personal understanding of the digestion process. I’m not a holistic or medical practitioner, but simply sharing my own personal trials and experimentations.
So what does this system do?
Basically, the digestive system helps our body break down the food we consume into nutrients, which it then uses for energy, growth and cell repair.
Our body is a wonderful instrument doing this process naturally, however our busy lifestyles and easy access to processed foods is causing this natural process to be hindered, big time, leading to inflammation, infections and toxic overload. Did you know a compromised gut is one of the biggest culprits of people developing autoimmune diseases?
So I’m sharing with you a few simple and FREE habits we can all perform daily, having a big fat positive effect on our body’s whole digestive process.
Habits to promote good digestion
Mindful Eating | Sit and relax without distraction. Relaxing the mind and body when eating helps to activate the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system, helping our body to properly digest food. For me, I play jazz, use my favourite vintage crockery and take a few deep breaths.
Chew | Did you know digestion begins in the mouth? As soon as food enters our mouth, our teeth and saliva start to break it down. If not chewed sufficiently from the start, the remaining steps of the digestive process are compromised.
Digestion Aids | Having raw ginger, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice before each meal, or adding warming spices like pepper, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon to our food can all help increase our Spleen’s ability to digest food properly.
Don’t Drink | Drinking while eating actually dilutes our digestive juices and interferes with the digestion process. If you need to drink, take small sips and keep the bulk of your water intake to between meals.
Food Prep| Not all foods are created equal when it comes to digestibility. Even the healthy ones! Case in point – raw veggies. They may be wonderful for us, but for those of us with gut issues, we need to steer clear of the raw stuff for a while. Try cooking veggies well and then puree (like mash or soup) as this is more soothing on our digestion. For proteins – slow cook them, helping to break down the meat before you even place in your mouth (think stews and casseroles).
